About

Library Camp Nebraska II is the second in a series of unconferences throughout the state of Nebraska. So, just what is an unconference?

An unconference is the best part of a conference (conversing with your colleagues) stripped out and crammed into a fun and informative day-long event. Unconferences have no pre-selected presenters, just group discussions on the topics that you want to talk about with your colleagues. Library Camp Nebraska will be using the BarCamp model for our unconference. Participation will be limited to just the first 50 registrants and is open to anyone who is interested in dialogue and conversation about customer-friendly libraries, library 2.0 and how we can all improve our services and organizations to meet the needs of our communities. (There will be tech topics covered, but if you aren't a techie, come talk about something else.)

Registrants are encouraged to post some information about themselves and submit topic ideas on this wiki. Once we all gather on the morning of October 28th, we'll decide as a group what is to be discussed. There will be 3-4 rooms available so many, many different discussions can occurr. If you join one and you find you're not as interested as you thought, just get up and head for another room.

WiFi access will be made available and attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops. Large pads of paper and markers will be available in the rooms.

Morning and afternoon snacks and beverages will be provided. You will be responsible for covering your lunch expenses. (There will be discussions scheduled for the lunch period so don't plan on going off-campus for lunch.)

What do I need to do next?

What's the tag for this event?

Please tag everything with libcampnebraska09. Yes, it's a little long but it works. (Abbreviating 'Nebraska' and 'NE' will make those not in the know think we're in the North East or something.)

What about CE credit?

Nebraska librarians who attend all day will earn 3 credit-hours of CE. The usual form will be your responsibility to fill out and submit.

Can I follow along if I'm not attending?

Yep, just head on over to the Library Camp Nebraska FriendFeed room.

Who's in charge of this circus?

If you've got suggestions or praise, you can let Michael Sauers or Christa Burns know. If you've got a complaint, please find someone else to talk to about it ;-)

Is this where I'm supposed to tell you about myself and submit a topic for discussion? I suppose that only happens after I register....

Hi, I'm Manya Shorr and I'm a reference librarian at Omaha Public Library. I grew up in Pasadena, CA but mostly recently lived in Portland, OR. I've been with OPL for about a year and a half. I've never participated in an unconference and I am intrigued.

My passion is outreach and programming for underserved adults. By this, I mean those in their 20s, 30s and early 40s who do not have children. I think public libraries do a lousy job of serving this group and I'm interested in talking about ways to do it better.

Umm. I haven't participated in an unconference yet either and I like the idea that the participants drive the discussion focus! I'm interested in how we can update the concept of "reference" so we move beyond "just in case" and waiting for patrons to come to us. What can we do that's more outreach based? How can we really update/modernize this service in a way that appeals to our patrons?

Hello! My name is Chrystal Dawson and I am the Access Services Specialist here at the Bellevue University Library. I have been here for 7 years now and one of my primary responsibilities is obtaining copyright permissions for our faculty & staff members. So, I am not sure how many of you would be interested in talking about copyright, especially the topic of streaming media. If not, then something that would be interesting to talk about is how other libraries get their students/patrons involved in various workshops or activities within their libraries.

Also, I have never attended an "unconference" either so I think this will be a lot of fun! Can't wait to meet everyone in October!

Hi, my name is Linda Parker. I am the Social Sciences Librarian at UNO. I participated in the 1st Library Camp, and I am back for another. I am interested in discussing the use of text messaging for answering brief reference questions. UNO is participating in a national trial through 2010. We currently use Meebo for instant message reference service. Now we are looking specifically at text messaging.

Michael -- You asked us to tag everything libcampnebraska09. I'm not sure what I am supposed to be tagging. My comments? My delicious bookmark?

duh, I should look at the page before I ask a question. Do you want us to create pages before the unconference, or create pages for our discussion groups that we participate in at the unconference.

I'm Vickie Morlock from Sidney. I drive the Bookmobile and take care of ILL and Adult Services. I have been at the library for 4 years. I am also trying to reach out more to the teens in our area. I like Crystal Dawson's idea. We have alot of teens that come in but all they do is use the internet. I would like to talk about ways I can get these kids up and interested in a teen Advisory Council or something constructive.

I'm also a Bookmobile person, from Lincoln. I've been with the city library for around 15 years in circ, technical process, and now Bookmobile, with several years before that spent as a student worker in UNL's music library. I'm a wee bit scared, having never participated in an Unconference before, but I'm hoping it will be very useful. I'd love to participate in discussions about outreach and libraries beyond walls. See you in October!

Hi, I'm Nicole. I'm the library director at the Yutan Public Library - a small, part-time library. I also work at the Keene Memorial Library in Fremont as the children's librarian assistant. I want to get my Master's in library science, but I'm unsure of which direction I want to take.

I am Martha Grenzeback from Omaha. I work as a clerk at the Swanson branch of the Omaha Public Library and as a librarian at the Baright Public Library in Ralston. I, too, am interested in outreach, and finding new ways to attract different population groups to the library. Another interest is making the library as user-friendly as possible--website, catalog, signage, etc.

Hi, I'm Pat Gross, Media Specialist for Gering High School and Gering Freshman Academy. I have been the Media Specialist for the Gering High School Media Center for the last 11 years. This school year, due to budget cuts and non replacement of a retired Media Specialist, I acquired the additional assignment of the Freshman Academy Media Center, which is in a separate building. The Freshman Academy Media Center is shared with the Gering Junior High staff and students. Our District Elementary Media Specialist was given the additional assignment of the 7th and 8th grade. Needless to say, the two of us are trying to co-share and manage this Media Center. I work with over 450 students and 40 staff members at the HS and 197 students and 10 teachers at the Freshman Academy. Never a dull moment!
I voluntarily sponsor the GHS Book Club, presently working with 35 student members, which meets during the lunch period twice a month. This experience has been such a delight and very successful, but involves a considerable time commitment.

Hi, I am Kathy Smith System Public Services Librarian from Buffalo NY. I excited to learn what you do and share my experiences in Buffalo. What I love about my career is the constant change, I have worked on Mobile units, participated in a variety of outreach, managed multiple branches, and worked with e-Branch (phone and online reference). Currently I work in collection development and statistics (computer and state report for the system). My interest is Google Docs. This month I'm using Google Docs to collect the results of our reference survey. I also used camtasia to create video instructions instead of formal training sessions. I'm interested in learning more about uses for Google Docs, branding of your library, collection development and gaming. I've never been to an UnConference but and looking forward to meeting all of you and sharing a fun and informative day together. I hope there's a prize for the one who travels the furthest!

I am the self-employed librarian of Contract Cataloging in Lincoln, Nebraska, which means that I have client libraries that outsource their cataloging to me.
Previously I was the Assistant Cataloging Projects Manager at BCR in Aurora, Colorado for 5 years, and before that the Serials and Document Delivery Librarian at Marathon Oil Company Petroleum Technology Center in Littleton, Colorado for 14 years.
This will be my first Unconference, but I'm really looking forward to the unconventional format and some great discussion topics.
